Norton Rose launches City Scrum 2012
2 March 2012

International legal practice Norton Rose LLP last night held a launch event for City Scrum 2012 at its London Bridge offices.

The City Scrum rugby tournament, in association with Harlequins RFC, will take place on Thursday 15 March at the Honourable Artillery Company in the Square Mile.

Last night’s event brought together team captains from the sixteen companies taking part, including Barclays, KPMG, and Thompson Reuters. Dressed in their team colours, the captains were joined by Harlequins players and staff, and representatives from the chosen charities Right To Play and Wooden Spoon. French rugby legend and Wooden Spoon ambassador Serge Betsen also attended.

Now in its fifth year, City Scrum is the only touch rugby tournament to take place in the City of London and will see teams from the biggest businesses in the Square Mile and Canary Wharf, stepping out of the boardroom and onto the rugby pitch to battle for the City Scrum Cup. Each team will be coached on the day by a Harlequins squad member.

There will also be an over-40s rugby sevens competition for the City Scrum Vase.

The event supports two charities, Right To Play, which uses sport and play to promote education, health, peace and life skills amongst children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world, and Wooden Spoon, the charity of British and Irish Rugby, which raises money for vulnerable children throughout the British Isles.

Ian Teare, a partner at Norton Rose Group, and captain of the practice’s over 40s side, said:

“It is great to have the opportunity to play competitive rugby (which it is, even in the 40+ event!) in such spectacular surroundings as the HAC, not to mention the opportunity to leave the office for a day to raise money for some really worthwhile causes.”

Conor O’Shea, Director of Rugby at Harlequins RFC, said:

“Last year’s event was a great day for both the players and all the teams involved. Once again I hope that the players being here helps to inspire the team to perform beyond their abilities”.

In addition to the two rugby tournaments, City Scrum will feature a children’s rugby clinic lead by Harlequins squad members, market stalls offering a range of rugby apparel, and a business lounge serving refreshments throughout the day.

To attend spectators should RSVP to CityScrum@nortonrose.com by Monday 5 March.
