Ashley Tsacalos is a dispute resolution lawyer based in Canberra and Sydney.
Ashley has experience in all forms of dispute resolution, including litigation in various courts and tribunals, as well as arbitration (both domestic and international), mediation and conciliation. He is engaged by both the public and private sector due to his extensive experience in managing complex and often sensitive disputes. He has particular expertise in relation to contractual disputes, intellectual property disputes, negligence claims and other tortious claims generally.
Ashley’s expertise in administrative law and insurance law provides him with a unique perspective in terms of dispute resolution generally. As a dispute resolution lawyer, Ashley has acted for numerous Australian government and NSW government departments and agencies. He is regularly engaged to provide advice on administrative law and public law issues, including freedom of information, privacy and administrator decision making. He is also instructed to act for government agencies in relation to applications for merits-based review or judicial review.
Ashley has significant experience and expertise in insurance law. This includes advising both the public and private sector in relation to coverage issues, insurance, indemnity and limitation of liability clauses in commercial contracts, insurance-related disputes, recovery actions and claims generally. He has considerable experience in relation to public and product liability claims, professional indemnity claims, business interruption claims, property damage claims and employer liability claims. He has particular skills in managing large-scale, multi-party disputes and litigation, such as representative proceedings and class actions.
Ashley established and continues to teach an insurance law course at the University of Wollongong, University of Sydney, University of Adelaide and the Australian National University in Canberra. This course is taught at both an undergraduate level and post-graduate level. Ashley has been appointed a Senior Visiting Fellow to the University of Wollongong and is an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Sydney. He has previously taught dispute resolution and civil procedure as well as corporations law at the University of Western Sydney. As a lecturer and facilitator, Ashley is often engaged by clients to provide internal seminars and training in various areas of the law.
Ashley is a state editor of the LexisNexis publications: Australian Insurance Law Bulletin and Civil Procedure News – NSW and a regular author of articles in these publications. He is also currently completing his Doctorate of Philosophy in Law.
