Norton Rose shows support for Nelson Mandela Foundation initiative at President Clinton reception
23 April 2012

At a reception in New York hosted by President Bill Clinton, international legal practice Norton Rose Group has shown its support for an initiative by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to promote the ethos of reconciliation and open dialogue to public audiences worldwide.

The event grew out of the friendship President Clinton and President Mandela continue to share. It marked the start of an initiative from the Nelson Mandela Foundation to ensure the lessons of Nelson Mandela’s life and leadership continue to act as an important example for future generations.

At the heart of the initiative is the Nelson Mandela Centre for Memory. Inaugurated in 2004 and endorsed as the core work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2006, the Centre for Memory works to keep alive the legacy of Nelson Mandela and use it to contribute to the making of a just society.

Norton Rose Group was one of the major sponsors of the event. Delegates from the international legal practice joined around 80 other attendees for the reception.

Peter Martyr, Group Chief Executive, Norton Rose Group, commented:

“The lives of great men like Nelson Mandela can act as a powerful example for people in every walk of life. We feel it’s important to ensure that example continues to be introduced to each new generation of leaders.

“The work of the Foundation and the Centre for Memory has become particularly pertinent for us since our expansion into South Africa last year and the appointment of Sbu Gule as the new chairman for Norton Rose South Africa in March. It’s a nation with an important role on the world stage, and we’re proud to support causes such as this one which have their roots there.”

Rob Otty, Managing Director, Norton Rose South Africa, commented:

“As a business, we have a strong focus on living the values we believe in. Adding our support to initiatives like this is one way we can do that. There are few worthier causes - the work of the Foundation and the Centre for Memory help ensure the work of Nelson Mandela continues to have a positive effect, both in this country and worldwide.”
