June 1, 2011
Norton Rose OR sounds the siren to start the trading day at Toronto Stock Exchange.
Today marks the launch of an expanded Norton Rose Group that now includes two new leading law firms: Ogilvy Renault LLP of Canada and Deneys Reitz Inc of South Africa. The move also marks Ogilvy Renault as the first Canadian law firm to go global.
As of today Ogilvy Renault becomes Norton Rose OR LLP.
With more than 2,600 lawyers, the enlarged Norton Rose Group is a top 10 international legal practice with 39 offices throughout Europe, Asia Pacific, Canada, Africa and the Middle East.
Norton Rose Group is recognized for its strength in five key sectors: financial institutions; energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; and technology and innovation. As part of our expansion, the enlarged Group offers an additional sixth sector strength—pharmaceuticals and life sciences.
"Today marks an exciting and historic day for our firm,” said John Coleman, Managing Partner of Norton Rose OR. “As we join the expanded Norton Rose Group, we are now part of the first truly global legal practice in Canada. We are now able to serve Canadian clients in a way that no other legal practice in Canada can match. It will also allow us to capture new inbound international work to Canada from key, growing markets in the global economy."
"Since we announced we would be joining forces with Norton Rose Group, the response from our clients has been extremely favourable,” said Coleman. “The cultural and business fit we have with the Group has grown even stronger. We’re proud to be moving forward with our new partners as one international legal practice. ”
There are significant business synergies between Canada, South Africa and the rest of Norton Rose Group, particularly in the areas of mining and natural resources, infrastructure, energy, financial institutions and insurance. The Group now has significantly increased resources across its principal practice areas, including corporate, banking, litigation and international arbitration, intellectual property and employment and labour.
“The expansion of the Group is a major step towards fulfilling our strategic aim of becoming one of the leading global providers of legal services,” said Group Chief Executive, Peter Martyr. “Our action as an industry forerunner, particularly in Australia and Canada, and our unmatched market position in Africa, have propelled the enlarged Group into the world’s top 10 largest international legal practices and opens new career opportunities for all our people.”
“In addition to international growth, we are committed to expanding the depth and breadth of our expertise across the Group’s key industry strengths, which ensures our clients have access to legal experts around the world with a strong industry focus,” said Martyr. “We have been delighted with the response from our clients who have been overwhelmingly supportive of our vision and increasing platform.”
Norton Rose Group continues to be led by London-based Peter Martyr as Group Chief Executive and Stephen Parish as Group Chairman with Don Boyd in Sydney as Group Deputy Chief Executive. John Coleman, based in Montréal, is Managing Partner of Norton Rose OR and Rob Otty, based in Johannesburg, is Managing Director of Norton Rose South Africa (incorporated as Deneys Reitz Inc); both join the Executive Committee of Norton Rose Group.
The new Group is one of the 10 largest international legal practices by number of lawyers and a top 20 international legal practice by fee income with total revenues in excess of US$1 billion.
