Norton Rose wins major tender to advise Zimbabwe Power Company
24 January 2012

International team offers unrivalled expertise

International legal practice Norton Rose Group has been named legal advisor to the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) on two prestigious power projects, the 600MW Hwange Thermal Power Expansion Project and the 300MW Kariba Dam Hydro Expansion Project.

The engagement agreement was signed on Friday, 20 January 2012. Norton Rose Group (in association with Zimbabwe counsel Gill Godlonton & Gerrans) was selected by ZPC for its combination of both international experience advising on groundbreaking projects and its understanding of Zimbabwe and the wider Southern African power market.

London-based partner Richard Metcalf will lead the project and electricity advice and Johannesburg-based partner Steven Gamble and his team will advise on the financing of these two major power projects.

Richard Metcalf, partner, Norton Rose LLP, said:

“Zimbabwe stands at the heart of the Southern African power market and these projects will help to unlock a number of regional initiatives as well as improving the supply of power within Zimbabwe. We are delighted to have been appointed to advise on these landmark transactions.”

Rob Otty, managing director at Norton Rose South Africa, commented:

“This is a true example of the benefits that our global platform provides to our clients, an understanding of local power markets combined with the global experience of ground breaking power projects. Steven Gamble, Richard Metcalf, Gavin Noeth, Hugh Bisset and our colleagues at Gill Godlonton & Gerrans, Mordecai Mahlangu and Sue Brighton, have made us proud.”
