New top 10 international legal practice Norton Rose Group launches today
1 June 2011
Today marks the launch of an expanded Norton Rose Group that now includes two additional leading law firms: Ogilvy Renault LLP of Canada and Deneys Reitz Inc of South Africa.
Ogilvy Renault from today becomes Norton Rose OR LLP and Deneys Reitz becomes Norton Rose South Africa (incorporated as Deneys Reitz Inc) (“Norton Rose South Africa”).
With more than 2,600 lawyers, including 795 partners, the enlarged Norton Rose Group is a top 10 international legal practice by number of lawyers, with 39 offices throughout Europe, Asia Pacific, Canada, Africa and the Middle East.
Norton Rose Group is recognised for its strength in five key sectors: financial institutions; energy; infrastructure, mining and commodities; transport; and technology and innovation. From today the enlarged Group offers an additional sixth sector strength in pharmaceuticals and life sciences, headed by Toronto-based partner Patrick Kierans.
The expansion opens up access to Canada and South Africa, which are both increasingly influential economies for the Group’s clients. In particular there are significant business synergies between Canada, South Africa and the rest of Norton Rose Group in the areas of mining and natural resources, infrastructure, energy, financial institutions and insurance. Integrating these geographies and industry strengths with the Group’s existing capability in Europe, the Middle East and particularly Asia Pacific offers compelling opportunities for clients.
The Group now has significantly increased resources across its principal practice areas, including corporate; banking; litigation and dispute resolution; intellectual property; employment and labour; anti-trust, competition and regulatory; real estate; and tax.
Group Chief Executive Peter Martyr said:
“The expansion of the Group is a major step towards fulfilling our strategic aim of becoming one of the leading global providers of legal services. Our actions as an industry forerunner, particularly in Australia and Canada, and our unmatched market position in Africa, have propelled the enlarged Group into the world’s top ten largest international legal practices and open new career opportunities for all our people.
“In addition to international growth, we are committed to expanding the depth and breadth of our expertise across the Group’s key industry strengths, which ensures our clients have access to legal experts around the world with a strong industry focus. We have been delighted with the response from our clients, who have been overwhelmingly supportive of the Group’s vision and increasing platform.”
Norton Rose Group continues to be led by London-based Peter Martyr as Group Chief Executive and Stephen Parish as Group Chairman with Don Boyd in Sydney as Group Deputy Chief Executive. John Coleman, based in Montréal, is Managing Partner of Norton Rose OR LLP and Rob Otty, based in Johannesburg, is Managing Director of Norton Rose South Africa; both join the Executive Committee of Norton Rose Group.
