"The interviews are conducted in a relaxed and informal way. In the interview it is important to be yourself as the partners are keen to see what kind of person you are and what you have to offer."

HELP AND GUIDANCE

The interview - some helpful hints

The aim of the interview process is for us to get to know you and for you to judge whether we are right for you. Your interview is likely to include a tour, a presentation, an interview with partners, a chance to talk with current trainees and a group exercise. The whole process normally takes half a day.

So what do we expect from you? First, that you're well prepared and that you've done some research on us. Second, that you're able to demonstrate the qualities we're looking for. And third, that you have clear expectations of your future. We'll be assessing your potential as a qualified solicitor and ideally as a future partner, so you need to think ahead of time about how you can demonstrate that.

We'll be equally considerate. We'll let you know quickly whether or not you've been successful and, if you are, we'll keep in touch until you join us.

The following tips will help you to plan a successful interview:

  • Research is crucial. There's no excuse for not being well informed about the practice to which you're applying. There is ample information available to you via brochures, publications, the Internet, presentations and law fairs.
  • Reasons for applying. A weak answer is one which is too general or which would apply to any legal practice. Your answer needs to make it clear that you have thoroughly researched the practice to which you are applying.
  • Think through your answers well. Don't regurgitate the brochure, website or a presentation. Digest all available information and then formulate your arguments. All answers should be complete, honest, carefully considered and appropriate.
  • All the information you provide on the application form will be discussed in the interview, so make sure that you remember what you wrote and that you're able to expand on your written answers.
