"When you're making your application it's really important to understand the kind of practice you're applying to. Do your research; take some time over it and you'll give yourself a good chance of getting an interview"

APPLICATION

What are we looking for?

We look for applications from candidates with any degree discipline, who demonstrate a consistently strong academic record. You are expected to have a minimum of 26/320 UCAS points at A Level or equivalent or similar level qualifications, and you should also have or be expecting at least an upper second class degree or equivalent. We look for people who are team players, with excellent interpersonal skills.

Do you make the grade?

  • Very good grades are a prerequisite. By that we mean at least As and Bs at A level (minimum of 26 UCAS points) and a solid 2:1 or above.
  • Positions of responsibility. Don't forget sixth form positions. If you were a school captain or head boy/girl it shows a degree of responsibility and leadership from a young age. You can also include positions of responsibility in your current job.
  • Work experience - a good variety of work experiences with plenty of legal exposure is highly recommended. Don't miss out any experience, whether work or extra-curricular, paid or un-paid, thinking that it isn't relevant. Some more menial work experience can be a good indicator that you're good at mixing with a variety of people.
  • International interest - either languages over and above GCSE level and/or independent travel.

Activities and interests:

Academic ability is by no means the only criterion for pre-selection. In addition to an excellent academic record, other desirable skills include:

  • Public speaking.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Team skills.
  • Leadership qualities.

These can be illustrated by:

  • Membership of a debating or similar society.
  • Involvement in a Young Enterprise Scheme.
  • Foreign Exchange Programmes.
  • Team sports.
  • Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
  • Responsibilities or achievements in your current career.

You don't have to be particularly sporty or musical. What we're looking for are interests and activities aside from your academic study or your employment that show you to be a well-rounded individual. Travel is also of interest to us because if you're internationally focused you'll be better suited to an international practice. Beyond travel, an interest in other cultures is highly desirable.
