Norton Rose Canada congratulates Jack Marshall, Q.C., on establishing independent practice
February 9, 2012

Norton Rose Canada extends its best wishes to Jack Marshall, Q.C., one of Canada's leading arbitrators and commercial litigation counsel, on establishing an independent practice. He left the former Macleod Dixon as of December 31, 2011 following a career of more than 45 years with the firm.

Marshall will continue his practice as an independent arbitrator, mediator and senior litigation counsel in domestic and international disputes. His focus will continue to be on disputes in the resource sector (including oil and gas, mining and electricity), and the securities and corporate/commercial areas. He will continue to provide support to Norton Rose Canada as co-counsel on matters in which he was engaged prior to the merger.

Marshall said:

“The decision not to join Norton Rose Canada has been extremely difficult for me, given that I have spent my career with Macleod Dixon since graduation from Law School in 1966, more than 45 years ago. The years with Macleod Dixon can only be described as wonderful. I have received much more than I have contributed and will always treasure the excellent lawyers, dedicated staff and terrific clients with whom I have worked. Being an arbitrator is a distinct role and in a very large global law firm creates conflicts. I reluctantly came to the conclusion that it was best to pursue my career independently. I wish my former colleagues all the best as part of Norton Rose Group and I look forward to continuing to work with them on specific engagements.”

Bill Tuer, partner at Norton Rose Canada said:

“Jack was one of the great leaders of the former Macleod Dixon and the Canadian arbitration practice as a whole. We are very appreciative of his talent which, along with our recent international expansion, has helped us build our leading reputation in this area. For his unique practice, Jack will continue his career independently and we will continue to work together in the future. We wish him well.”

Norton Rose Canada currently has more than 150 litigation lawyers and approximately 50 arbitration and alternative dispute resolution lawyers. With the added strength of Macleod Dixon joining Norton Rose Group on January 1, 2012, we are positioned better than ever in these areas.

Marshall's legal career began in 1966 when he started articling with Macleod Dixon. His practice included litigation, regulatory and alternative dispute resolution. He headed the firm’s litigation practice group for many years and served as Chairman from 2000 to 2007. Marshall received many accolades over the years and was recently recommended by Best Lawyers 2012, Benchmark Canada 2012 and Lexpert®/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada 2011.
