Martin Valasek named leading figure of international arbitration bar by Global Arbitration Review
August 23, 2011

Martin Valasek, Canadian partner of Norton Rose Group, has been named to Global Arbitration Review’s (GAR) list of leading figures of the international arbitration bar under the age of 45. Only two lawyers from Canadian firms were included in the “45 under 45.” GAR is the world’s leading international arbitration law journal and news service.

Martin, who is based in our Montreal office, was previously named one of Lexpert’s “Top 40 Lawyers under 40” in 2007. He also appears in the June 2011 Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in Commercial Arbitration and the 2011 International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration.

Martin has acted in many international arbitrations, covering a wide range of legal systems and industries. Recently, he acted for AbitibiBowater Inc. in its NAFTA claim against the Government of Canada arising from the expropriation of its rights and assets in Newfoundland and Labrador by provincial legislation, resulting in a settlement for compensation of $130 million.

Martin said:

“This recognition reflects the tremendous team that we have. I look forward to continuing our growth in international arbitration with our new colleagues within Norton Rose Group, which gives us global resources to take on our clients’ most important international disputes.”

Pierre Bienvenu, Global Practice Leader of Norton Rose Group’s international arbitration practice, said:

“We’re very pleased to see Martin’s expertise and abilities, well known to our clients and colleagues, recognized by a leading publication such as Global Arbitration Review. His nomination to the 45 under 45 is a well-deserved honour.”

Renée Thériault, Of Counsel in our Ottawa office, was awarded an Honourable Mention in this year’s GAR list. In the previous guide (2006), GAR named Stephen Drymer to the 45 under 45 list. Stephen is a Partner based in our Montreal office.
