Norton Rose acts on African equity deal of the year
15 May 2012

Zambeef listing and rights issue wins The Banker 2012 Deal of the Year in Africa for equities

A deal on which international legal practice Norton Rose Group took a lead role has won Deal of the Year in Africa for equities in this year’s awards from The Banker magazine.

The awards, which celebrate the most impressive transactions across a variety of classes, recognised the dual listing of Zambeef Products Plc on London’s AIM market as the most significant African equity deal of 2012. The IPO was launched alongside a rights issue in Zambia, and made Zambeef the first Zambian incorporated, Lusaka listed company to list internationally.

Zambeef is one of the largest agri-businesses in Zambia, and also has operations in Nigeria and Ghana.

The Norton Rose Group team was led in London by corporate partner, Glenn Hall, with assistance from Frankie Sangwin and Ed Sumner. US securities law advice was provided by corporate partner, Tom Vita and Alex Hirshfeld. Alastair Dixon (director) led the team in South Africa.

Glenn Hall, corporate partner, Norton Rose LLP, commented:

“This was the first major deal in a trend that’s driving a number of emerging economies, especially in Africa. Agri-business remains a rapidly growing market and one that is receiving a great deal of international investor attention, so helping Zambeef capitalise on that attention and access international equity markets was incredibly satisfying.

“For our part, it’s a deal we’re proud of for many reasons, not least of which is the way we were able to bring together colleagues from Europe and Africa. That mix of expertise meant we could provide the right advice at the right time to get this deal across the line.”
